Railway Standards Compliance

EN 50121-4 – This standard relates to EMC conformance for railway track-side deployment.

IEC 61373 – This standard covers vibration / shock conformance in railway applications.

Our RocketLinx switches carrying the above certifications have been tested to comply with strict railway standards governing both electromagnetic conformance and shock and vibration for rail-based equipment.  Comtrol’s industrial Ethernet switches feature rugged design and exceptional reliability – and ensure that switch operation does not interfere with other critical electronic equipment deployed in track-side installations.

A Summary of EN50121-4

This European Standard applies to a signaling and telecommunication apparatus which is installed in the railway environment. This standard specifies limits for emission and immunity and provides performance criteria for signaling and telecommunications (S&T) apparatus which may interfere with other apparatus in the railway environment, or increase the total emissions for the railway environment beyond the limits defined in the appropriate standard and so risk causing Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) to apparatus outside the railway system.

Avoiding Ring Topology? Benefits You May Not Know About

SwitchesHave you ever considered using a ring topology for your IP surveillance network?

Here at Comtrol, we rarely hear of customers who utilize networks that are configured in a ring.  A star topology is almost always the way networks are configured by most of our customers across industrial automation, security, energy and other major markets we specialize in.

Likely one of the biggest reasons why people avoid a ring topology is that there is rarely interoperability between different brands of switches within that ring.  There is also the fear of broadcast storm.  If one switch goes down in a ring, you will have to buy that brand of switch again for use in that ring unless you remove all current switches and install another brand completely.

Networking Beyond the Climate Controlled Closet

A well designed and neatly organized standard IT rack can be enough to make even the most reserved IT department grin.  In a climate controlled closet free of excessive heat, dust, and moisture, standard networking hardware is left to run its course networking the office one Ethernet connection at a time.Climate Controlled Closet

Comtrol Corporation and our RocketLinx® line of Ethernet switches play on the other side of the wall.  We are outside of the office in a control panel, traffic cabinet, parking garage, on a light pole fixture, or even mounted on a moving vehicle.  Before discussing how the features of an Ethernet switch can impact an installation a user mush ask: “Can the Ethernet switch I select withstand the physical environment in which I need to place it?”

Heat – How hot will it be in the area I mount my product? Comtrol’s standard RocketLinx switches operate between -25°C and +60°C.  Our -XT (extended temperature) switches operate between -40°C and +85°C. The requirements to identify a switch that can withstand the physical environment in which you place it may seem trivial, but can produce a massive headache.  Outside of the networking closet it is important to consider:
